Description
Inflammatory Bowel Disease is a chronic inflammatory disease with an increasing prevalence in the US, nearly doubling from 33 per 100,000 (2007) to 77 per 100,00 (2016). IBD is the overarching term for Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. Health care professionals should be able to identify the signs/symptoms of IBD in the pediatric population as well as understand the steps that should be taken to confirm the diagnosis and initiate treatment at an early age. Early recognition and intervention is imperative as this inflammatory condition can also lead to nutritional deficiencies and thus subsequent poor growth, pubertal delays, and body image concerns, to name a few. This lecture aims to educate fellow pediatric physician assistants in the diagnosis and management of IBD as well as identifying common nutritional deficiencies and treatments for such deficiencies.
