Description
Recent estimates show about 0.6% of pediatric patients aged 0 to 17 are living with epilepsy. These patients not only are at risk for requiring medical attention from their neurologic diagnosis but are also more likely to seek care and struggle with mental health and school performance. Regardless of medical practice location or specialty, these patients will challenge the pediatric provider. The purpose of this lecture is to review epilepsy basics, discuss common myths and misconceptions, and outline what an epilepsy work-up looks like in the current era of medicine. We will also discuss the common urgent and emergent situations that may occur in any setting for children living with this life-altering diagnosis.
