Description

Since the COVID pandemic began in 2020, there has been an influx of adolescent anxiety and depression. COVID restrictions isolated the most vulnerable age group, who are so used to being social creatures. These diseases were prevalent before the pandemic; however, it has increased exponentially. Mental health screenings can be used as a tool with every well child visit starting at age 8 for anxiety and 11 for depression to potentially indicate the start of these diseases. In turn, we can then continue to screen and treat. There also must be lifestyle changes and adaptations that patients and their families take part in, to ensure a continuation of forward progress. This includes, but is not limited to, a healthy diet, daily vitamin D and physical activity, and good sleep hygiene. Working with a counselor or therapist is also imperative as part of a good treatment plan, engaging in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to ensure the patient can learn coping skills and techniques. If medications are warranted, there are abundant options including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) as first line for this age group. Taking care of mental health in this age group is imperative in order to prevent worsening of symptoms including contemplating and completing suicide, which is the 4th most common cause of death among 15-29 year-olds according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The consequences of failing to address adolescent mental health conditions extends to adulthood so we must address them as early as possible using our skills and screening tools.
